Q: Please introduce yourself
My name is Robert Citu, known in the music world as Kidoo. I’m a DJ and music producer with a lifelong passion for music, which has inspired me to create a style that merges various genres, offering my audience an immersive and energetic experience. I’ve had the privilege of performing at renowned venues worldwide and releasing music on some of the most respected labels in the industry. Beyond performing, I love exploring new sounds, collaborating with other artists, and continuously refining my craft to bring fresh and innovative elements to the music scene.
Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?
As a huge movie enthusiast, watching films daily from classics to the latest releases, I’d love to have a coffee with Jason Statham. We’d sit down for an Italian espresso with a proper English breakfast on the side. His intense roles and dedication to action films are really inspiring, and I’d enjoy hearing about his experiences, stunts, and even the behind-the-scenes challenges he’s faced. It would be incredible to get insight from someone who’s brought such memorable characters to life on screen.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to teleport. As a touring DJ, I travel a lot, and teleportation would make it so much easier to get from one place to another instantly. It would save time, reduce the stress of travel, and allow me to connect with audiences around the world even faster. Plus, it would give me the chance to explore new cultures and gain inspiration from different places without the usual travel constraints.
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?
If I had the chance to compose a film score, I would choose The Irishman. It’s a masterful film that blends history, drama, and complex character development. The score would need to reflect the somber, reflective nature of the story while capturing the tension and emotions of the characters’ journeys. I would focus on creating a mix of subtle, atmospheric sounds with orchestral elements to match the film’s deep themes of loyalty, time, and regret. I believe music could play a pivotal role in amplifying the introspective moments and the intense atmosphere of this kind of epic narrative.
Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?
The artists who have influenced me the most in my music career are Jamie Jones, Joseph Capriati, Michael Bibi, and PAWSA. Jamie Jones’ ability to blend deep house with melodic elements inspired me to explore creative production styles and focus on creating a unique atmosphere. Joseph Capriati’s powerful sound has shown me the importance of energy and connection with the crowd. Michael Bibi’s approach to house and tech-house has motivated me to experiment with grooves that keep the audience moving. PAWSA’s intricate productions taught me how to combine melody and rhythm to create dynamic and captivating soundscapes. These artists have all shaped my approach to both production and DJing.
Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?
My journey in music has been built on hard work and a passion for music. I’ve had the privilege of playing at some incredible venues and events like DC10 for Circoloco and Solid Grooves, Metamorfosi at Amnesia Ibiza, Destino Ibiza with Music On, E1, KOKO and fabric in London... Connecting with the people through my music has always been at the core of what I do. After years of dedication, I’m fortunate to have a solid management team and great booking agencies behind me, helping me continue to grow and reach new audiences.
Q: Everyone goes through ups and downs, what’s one habit you adopt to push through the downs?
One habit I’ve adopted to push through the downs is maintaining a strong focus on my music and creative process. Whenever I face challenges, I turn to production or DJing as a way to clear my mind and channel my emotions into something positive. This helps me stay grounded and reminds me of why I started in the first place. I also make sure to take time for myself to recharge, whether that’s through a good film or spending time with loved ones, so I can come back with renewed energy and perspective.
Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?
One performance that remains unforgettable to me was my first show at KOKO in London. The energy in that venue was incredible, and the crowd was so responsive—it was a true milestone. Another unforgettable moment was closing Metamorfosi at Amnesia in 2024. The atmosphere was absolutely electric, and it felt like the perfect way to close such an amazing event. Both performances were special in their own way, and they truly solidified my connection with the audience and my passion for the craft.
Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?
My music style has evolved significantly over the years, from a more experimental phase to developing a unique blend of deep, groovy tech-house with melodic and atmospheric elements. Initially, I focused on honing my production skills and experimenting with different sounds. As I grew as an artist and performed at renowned venues, I became more attuned to the crowd’s energy and the way music can shape the atmosphere. My style now reflects that balance of keeping the groove infectious while building emotional depth. I’ve also become more confident in blending genres and pushing boundaries to create something fresh, both in my DJ sets and production.
Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?
If I had to follow another music genre, I would probably choose ambient or downtempo. I’ve always been fascinated by how these genres create atmosphere and evoke deep emotions. The slow build-ups and intricate textures in ambient music allow for a different kind of creative expression, focusing on mood and sonic exploration. It’s also a great way to push the boundaries of sound design and experiment with more subtle, introspective music—something that contrasts with the high energy of my usual style, but still offers a powerful experience.
Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?
1. Daft Punk - ‘Around the World’.
This track was one of the first to show me the endless possibilities of electronic sounds and rhythms. The repetitive groove and unique structure felt like nothing else at the time and drew me in.
2. The Chemical Brothers - ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’.
The energy in this track was so powerful—it had this raw, festival-ready vibe that made me fall in love with electronic music’s intensity. It’s one of those tracks that feels timeless.
3. Jamie Jones - ‘Hungry for the Power (Remix)’.
Jamie Jones’ remix of this track got me hooked on the deeper, groovier side of house music. It’s such a perfect blend of hypnotic rhythm and bass that really inspired me to explore house music production. These tracks not only opened my mind but also influenced my style heavily. Let me know if you’ve got any favorites that sparked your journey too.
Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?
In my home country, Romania, I would recommend the salt mines of Slănic Prahova as the perfect location for a rave. These underground spaces offer an incredible, otherworldly atmosphere with their vast caverns and unique acoustics. The combination of raw, industrial surroundings and the isolation of being underground would create a truly unforgettable experience for a rave. The deep, resonating sounds of techno and house music would echo through the tunnels, amplifying the energy of the crowd, while the stunning, almost surreal setting would transport people into a different world. It would be the perfect mix of nature, history, and electronic music.
Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?
Finishing the year, I’m excited about two upcoming releases. On 15th November, ‘Mezcal Bounce’, a track I made with my buddy SOSA was released on Coco. And on 13th December, I’m keeping a big secret—my biggest record to date will be out, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. It’s a project I’ve put a lot of work into, and I’m incredibly proud of it. Stay tuned for that!
Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?
A fun fact about Kidoo is that the name sometimes reflects my lifestyle more than people might think! I’m 24, but sometimes I feel like I’m still 10, embracing life with a playful spirit and not taking things too seriously. It’s all about keeping that sense of fun and curiosity, both in my life and my music.
