Q: Please introduce yourself
Hi to all the readers of Toka Musik. We are Tommy and Marco, a duo of DJs and producers from Catanzaro, a small city in the region of Calabria situated in the south of Italy. We have been performing together as the Neverdogs since 2000, but we have known each other for more than 26 years. Our collaboration is not a simple business, but we feel like a deep brother.
Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?
Tommy: Pablo Picasso because he had the power to change the entire world of art with his visions. He's still an example of genius, and I would love to listen to him tell me about his life.
Marco: With Dave from Depeche Mode, because I love their music, and for me, they have always been my reference not only in my private life but also in my career.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Tommy: I like to absorb the knowledges that our world can offer to us. I think that with the teleportation superpower I can shorten the travel times and get to know more different places, ethnic cultures and foods taste in less time. The life is too short…
Marco: I'd like to fly by myself to be able to travel the world and see the places that otherwise you can't see with the plain.
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?
Tommy: I think that "Once Upon a Time in America" of Sergio Leone is an artwork that will remain in the history. I choose this film because Ennio Morricone, with his music was able to touch my soul and make me enter to the scenes almost as a protagonist. He composes no just a simple soundtracks but a proper soul poems.
Marco: A thriller movie because I have always been attracted by this kind of film. I like the suspense.
Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?
Tommy: for sure, Carl Cox because he is an example of passion and perseverance in the music industry; he represents for me the love and the power of the music in the DJ booth. His career started in 1986, and he is still there with the same freshness as the first day, making people dance all over the world. Big respect. In my personal life, I feel influenced day by day by different artists, musicians, songs, books, comics, artworks and people. It depends on the situation.
Marco: my uncle dj Freddy that introducing me to the music world and tech me to play. In my personal life I think that my Bamboleo team influenced me the most.
Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?
Our journey in the music industry was and still is full of emotions. For both of us, everything started in a small city in south Italy, then, step by step, we moved to the north of Italy, where the club scene was stronger than in the south. At some point, we decided to move to live in London, which opened our way to the world and introduced us to professional nightlife. Follow our residency in Ibiza at Music On of Marco Carola. What got us where we are today is the passion and the perseverance.
Q: Everyone goes through ups and downs, what’s one habit you adopt to push through the downs?
Tommy: when I feel down, the thing that revives me is to painting. Transferring all my thoughts through the colours on the white canvas makes me happy.
Marco: Touring around the world and playing my music.
Q: What is one pro work ethic that you would recommend to the readers/listeners?
Tommy: the respect for yourself and for those around you.
Marco: to be honest with yourself. This will allow you to pursue your passions more easily.
Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?
We started to play separately, with different musical research and interests, but somehow, we had something in common; in fact, at some point in our lives, we joined together. Music evolves continuously, and while you are maintaining your personality, you must try to keep up with the times so as not to run the risk of getting bored and extinguishing the fire/love for the music you have inside. In 30 years of our journey in music, we touched Garage, House, Pop, Deep House, Techno, Tech House, Breakbeat, and Progressive House but always chose tracks to play in our performances that were close to our way of being and our vision of the dancefloor where the happiness must be the first think.
Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?
Tommy: Punk – Melodic/Rock because it was the music of my childhood.
Marco: New Wave/ Electronic Pop because I love the bands of the 80's.
Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?
Tommy:
1. Frankie Knuckles, Tears (Satoshi Tomiie Remix), because of my respect for the house music father and for a big artist such as Satoshi Tomiie.
2. Carleen Anderson, Apparently Nothing (K Klassic mix), because I think that is not just a song but a musical poem.
3. New Order – Blue Monday because I love the 80's New Wave.
Marco:
1. Masters at Work – Kenlhou 3 (What a sensation), because Masters at Work have always been, for me, one of the best producers of all time.
2. Lil Louis – French Kiss. I get crazy during the break when the bpm changes.
3. Nightcrawlers - Push the Feeling On (The Dub of Doom); this track reminds me of Mino on The Mix, a DJ from our land, who played it on Sunday afternoons when I went dancing in the disco for the first time.
Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?
The Calabrian region has so many natural/historical places where to fit a rave, but we think that the best-hidden gem in our home country is the "Sila National Park". It would be great to have a rave in the forest next to the lake of our beautiful region during the summer.
Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?
On the 31st January 2025, we will release the remixes of our track Technology of Guti, Darius Syrossian and Jean Pierre on our own Bamboleo Records. Soon, we will release our Remix for Adez on Dimmish's label. The plans are to continue to travel the world and share our music with people. We have our Bamboleo showcases and regular gigs as Neverdogs. This Friday, we will be in Rome (IT) at Circolo Degli Illuminati Club for the "Life On Mars" party, and on 17th November, we will act in Turin (IT) for the Movement Festival alongside Timo Maas, Youniverse and Dario Loconte. On 23rd November, we will have a Bamboleo showcase at Simple Club in Ferrara (Italy) with Blondi, Dimmish, Hector Couto and Lorenzo De Blanck, then for the 30th, we will play at Spook Club in Valencia (Spain).
Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?
Tommy: I remember that when I was younger, I used to love to cook. I often cooked for friends and relatives, but at some point in my life, to continue to follow my dream and continue to buy vinyl, I had to start to work in the kitchen of a pub for about a year, where I went totally crazy. From that moment, I stopped to do it at home, and I don't think that I'll ever cook again. The only plates/turntables that I want to touch are to play music. Ehehehhe
Marco: yes, was many years ago, in London. I remember that was NYE. After finish to play in many party and afterparties, when I went home I realized that I forgot my record bag with all the vinyl at the train station. I decided to go back to the station to try to find the record bag and when I arrived there, I was shocked because it was there. It can happen just in London.
