Q: Please introduce yourself
I am Robert Babicz. Producing music since 1990, I've dedicated my life to music. Not sure if I am really human.
Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?
Karl-Heinz Stockhausen. He is one of the pioneers of electronic music, creating before any synths were invented, and he followed his vision until his death.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love to be able to fly. I do this already in my dreams, so it would be nice. No traffic, no airports.
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?
Logan's Run from 1976. This was one of the first movies that gave me an idea of a future when I was a child. I still love this film.
Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And who has been the most influential in your personal life?
Really difficult question. In terms of music: Frankie Goes to Hollywood, J.M. Jarre, K.H. Stockhausen, Phuture, Mixmaster Morris. In my personal life, my family and friends, of course.
Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?
Electronic music was always alien music for me, coming from the future. I started with a Commodore Amiga computer with tracker software. Somehow, I was able to make music without knowing what I was doing and got a record deal. After my first live act, I knew why I am here on this planet, because before, I had no idea why I was even born.
Q: Everyone goes through ups and downs, what’s one habit you adopt to push through the downs?
One of the fundamental truths in life is that everything is changing; nothing will stay. So, all bad or good stuff is only with you for a certain time. And then, things will change. 100%.
Q: What is one pro work ethic that you would recommend to the readers/listeners?
Always finish what you start. I don't have any unfinished songs on my computer. It's better to finish all because you will learn something, even if the song is not good and you delete it after.
Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?
I started with acid techno and over the years, I opened my mind to everything that feels good. This is the reason when somebody asks me what music I do, I say Babiczstyle.
Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?
I am already genre-fluid. I don’t care about the style police at all.
Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?
Phuture - Acid Tracks. When I heard this the very first time, I started to cry because I was sure this abstract sound must be made by aliens, and I needed to meet them one day.
Then all 12" from FGTH were extremely influential for me. I think they still play a role in the way how I arrange my music.
J.M. Jarre's Oxygene was for me just wonderful, perfect children's music.
Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?
I grew up in Germany, in the city of Cologne, and not far away is a very special mountain called Drachenfels, with a magical view.
Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?
I focus on my new label, Kelch, where I am almost releasing one single per month. But also gave Krafted a nice dreamy track for their compilation. And planning some collabs with great artists like Deep Forest.
Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?
My favorite soup is Borscht 🙂
Bonus Q Powered by Pioneer DJ: How did Pioneer DJ influence your career and what is your favorite Pioneer DJ gear?
On the stage, I always want a Pioneer DJ mixer because the interface offers the best user experience. At the moment, the V10 is my favorite and number one on my technical rider.
