Soul Button needs no introduction, founder of Steyoyoke, Inner Symphony and the Ethereal Techno Genre takes on our 14 fakts interview ahead of his headline show at The Grand Factory in Beirut on April 13.
Q: Introduce yourself then describe yourself in one word
Hi, I’m Chris aka Soul Button; DJ, Producer and owner of Steyoyoke, Steyoyoke Black and Inner Symphony labels, also the founder of Ethereal Techno genre. I’m a bit of a workaholic who doesn’t like big egos and live for the love of art. One word to describe me is Determined.
Q: Analog or Digital and why?
Both, I use lots of VST and my analog Dave Smith synths. If you know how to process a digital sound, the difference is irrelevant.
Q: Favorite Club/Venue and why does it stand out from the rest?
Stereo Montréal. Always the best experience with the best extended sets, amazing sound and crowd, and no alcohol.
Q: What was the driving force that got you into DJing/Producing and when?
I was 16 when I listened to Kraftwerk for the first time and thought to myself, I want to make this type of music. So, I convinced my dad to buy me the first Roland R8 and the rest is history. My first vinyl was released when I was 19.
Q: If you were to have a superpower, what would it be and why?
To make everyone equal. No rich, no poor, just equal. The world would be a much better place.
Q: Favorite dish?
Sushi
Q: What’s your biggest fear while performing?
The emergency loop of the CDJs. It happens when they use cheap cable to link the CDJ.
Q: 1 person you’d dream to have a coffee with?
Madonna. She was my childhood crush and I’m curious to see what she’s really like. Btw, I heard she lives in Lisbon and I might move there soon.
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score from the past, what movie would you choose and why?
‘Requiem For A Dream’ because I would have created exactly the same soundtrack.
Q: Recommend a Hidden Gem in your Home country
Definitely the Roman Amphitheater in my home town of Lecce in Southern Italy. Every time I visit my mom and I pass by it, I imagine a big rave.
Q: 3 tracks that got you into electronic music
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - Daft Punk
Spacelab- Kraftwerk
Riverside - Sidney Samson
Q: Tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for this year (Exclusive release/announcement)
I’m releasing my next EP in July and I’m closely working together with a couple of vocalists, I will announce these things on my Instagram account in the next weeks!
Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself that most of your followers don’t know
The main melody of my track “Swift Minds” was recorded by my cat. I was producing the track at home when I clicked record on a MIDI track and suddenly my cat jumped on the keyboard and I recorded a quick sequence of notes which I had to fix, but the main idea came from him
Q: Last but not least, do you have any question for us?
Soul Button: How would you describe Soul Button in one word?
Toka: Ethereal
Q: What to expect from your show at The Grand Factory on April 13?
A set full of unreleased tracks and maybe a special remix I’ve been working on for the Lebanese crowd.
